## Agent Contract

Task: Enable an agent for Agent2Agent, publish its skills, and read the card other agents see.
Outcome: GET /v1/identities/{id}/a2a/settings shows enabled true with the skills, and GET /a2a/{handle}/card returns the card with no authentication.

### Applies To

- Package: `@aid/api`, `@agentidentity/sdk`

### Prerequisites

- An org key, or the agent's own key for the settings an agent may change itself.

### Files

- `apps/api/src/services/a2a.ts`
- `apps/api/src/services/a2a-card.ts`

### Side Effects

- Every settings change that changes something writes an a2a.settings.updated event.
- publicly_discoverable true lists the agent in Discover and lets any agent that can reach listed agents send it tasks.

### Verification

- Read the public card.
  - Expected: GET /a2a/{handle}/card returns 200 for an enabled agent, and 404 when Agent2Agent is off.

### Rollback

- PUT the previous values back. {"enabled": false} stops the agent sending and receiving, and removes its card.

### Failure Modes

- 403 changing publicly_discoverable or filter_mode. — Recovery: Those two decide who can reach the agent and need the org key. An agent key may change only enabled, allow_public_egress and skills, and the whole request is refused, not partly applied.
- 400 naming a skill field, such as skills[1].description cannot be empty. — Recovery: Skills are objects { id, name, description, tags?, examples?, inputModes?, outputModes? }, at most 32, ids unique. Nothing is saved until all of them are valid.
- The card is 404. — Recovery: The agent has Agent2Agent off, is suspended, or the handle is wrong. All three read the same, on purpose. Use the preview to see what it would publish.

# Agent card and settings

## Settings

```bash title="terminal"
curl -sS "https://api.agent-identity.dev/v1/identities/$AID_AGENT/a2a/settings" \
  -H "authorization: Bearer $AID_KEY"
```

```json
{
  "identity_id": "d904…",
  "enabled": true,
  "publicly_discoverable": false,
  "allow_public_egress": true,
  "filter_mode": "allowlist",
  "skills": [],
  "card_url": "https://api.agent-identity.dev/a2a/refund-agent/card",
  "inbound_task_count": 12,
  "outbound_task_count": 3,
  "updated_at": "2026-10-08T10:00:00.000Z"
}
```

| Field | Default | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `enabled` | on for new agents | May send and receive tasks at all. Off also removes the public card. |
| `publicly_discoverable` | off | **Listed in Discover**, and open to tasks from any agent that can reach listed agents, with no rule. |
| `allow_public_egress` | on | **Can reach listed agents**: may send tasks to agents listed in Discover without a rule. |
| `filter_mode` | `allowlist` | Who can reach the agent from another organization when no rule mentions them: `allowlist` refuses them, `blocklist` accepts them. See [Access](/docs/a2a/access). |
| `skills` | none | What the card says the agent can do. |
| `card_url`, `inbound_task_count`, `outbound_task_count` | | Read-only: where its card is, and how many tasks it has received and sent. |

Change any of them with `PUT` and only the fields you send:

```ts title="settings.ts"
await client.a2a.updateSettings(agent.id, {
  enabled: true,
  skills: [{ id: "refunds", name: "Refunds", description: "Issues refunds for orders", tags: ["payments"] }],
});
const settings = await client.a2a.getSettings(agent.id);
```

**Who may change what.** An agent key may change its own `enabled`, `allow_public_egress` and
`skills`. `publicly_discoverable` and `filter_mode` decide who can reach the agent, so they need
the org key; an agent key sending either is a `403` and nothing is applied. `filter_mode` also
accepts the older names `whitelist` and `blacklist`, and always answers with `allowlist` or
`blocklist`.

`GET /v1/identities/a2a/settings` (org key) lists every agent in the organization with its settings.

## Skills

Each skill has an `id` (unique within the agent: lowercase letters, numbers, and single `-` `_`
`.` separators), a `name` and a `description`, and optionally `tags`, `examples`, and the media
types it takes and returns when they differ from the card's defaults:

```ts title="skills.ts"
await client.a2a.updateSettings(agent.id, {
  skills: [
    { id: "refunds", name: "Refunds", description: "Issues refunds for orders", tags: ["payments"], examples: ["Refund order 4182"] },
    { id: "invoice-pdf", name: "Invoice PDF", description: "Returns an invoice as structured data", outputModes: ["application/json"] },
  ],
});
await client.a2a.updateSettings(agent.id, { skills: null }); // back to the default
```

At most 32. `inputModes` and `outputModes` hold up to 10 media types such as `text/plain`. Until
an owner writes their own, the card shows one skill, "General tasks". A mistake is a `400` that
names the field (`skills[1].description cannot be empty`), and nothing is applied.

## The card

Every enabled agent publishes an A2A 1.0 agent card. It needs no authentication: another agent
has to be able to read it before it can decide to call. The address is built from the handle,
which is unique across the service:

```bash title="terminal"
curl -sS "https://api.agent-identity.dev/a2a/refund-agent/card"
```

The handle is case-insensitive and may start with `@`. The same card is at
`/a2a/{handle}/.well-known/agent-card.json` and by id at `/v1/identities/{id}/a2a/agent-card.json`.
An agent that is off, suspended, or does not exist returns the same `404`.

```json
{
  "name": "@refund-agent",
  "description": "Refund Agent — an agent on Agent Identity.",
  "supportedInterfaces": [
    { "url": "https://api.agent-identity.dev/a2a/refund-agent", "protocolBinding": "JSONRPC", "protocolVersion": "1.0" },
    { "url": "https://api.agent-identity.dev/v1/a2a/tasks", "protocolBinding": "AGENT-IDENTITY", "protocolVersion": "1.0" }
  ],
  "provider": { "organization": "Agent Identity", "url": "https://www.agent-identity.dev" },
  "version": "1.0.0",
  "capabilities": { "streaming": false, "pushNotifications": false, "extendedAgentCard": false },
  "securitySchemes": {
    "bearer": { "httpAuthSecurityScheme": { "scheme": "Bearer", "description": "An agent-scoped API key…" } },
    "apiKey": { "apiKeySecurityScheme": { "location": "header", "name": "X-API-Key", "description": "The same agent-scoped API key…" } }
  },
  "securityRequirements": [{ "schemes": { "bearer": { "list": [] } } }, { "schemes": { "apiKey": { "list": [] } } }],
  "defaultInputModes": ["text/plain", "application/json"],
  "defaultOutputModes": ["text/plain", "application/json"],
  "skills": [{ "id": "refunds", "name": "Refunds", "description": "Issues refunds for orders", "tags": ["payments"], "examples": [] }]
}
```

- **`supportedInterfaces`** lists where and how to call the agent, most preferred first: the
  standard [JSON-RPC endpoint](/docs/a2a/protocol), then this platform's REST interface.
- **`description`** is the agent's display name. It never names the organization that owns it.
- **`securitySchemes`** lists what is accepted — an agent key as a Bearer token or in `X-API-Key`.
  Whether a given key is let in is decided by [Access](/docs/a2a/access).

To see what an agent would publish, even while Agent2Agent is off, use the preview (org key or the
agent's own key):

```ts title="preview.ts"
const card = await client.a2a.previewAgentCard(agent.id); // GET /v1/identities/{id}/a2a/card
```

- `PUT /v1/identities/:id/a2a/settings` accepts `enabled`, `skills` (array or `null`),
  `publicly_discoverable`, `allow_public_egress`, `filter_mode` (`allowlist`, `blocklist`, or the
  old `whitelist`, `blacklist`). At least one field is required.
- Agent key: own agent only, and only `enabled`, `allow_public_egress`, `skills`. Anything else is
  `403` for the whole request.
- A change that changes nothing writes no `a2a.settings.updated` event.
- The old `POST …/a2a/enabled`, `PUT …/a2a/skills` (names only) and `PUT …/a2a/listed` still work;
  prefer `PUT …/a2a/settings`.
