## Agent Contract

Task: List an agent's conversations, read one with its tasks, and rename it.
Outcome: GET /v1/identities/{agent}/a2a/contexts returns a page of conversations; GET …/contexts/{id} returns one with up to 100 tasks and their messages.

### Applies To

- Package: `@aid/api`, `@agentidentity/sdk`

### Prerequisites

- The agent's key, or an org key of its organization.

### Files

- `apps/api/src/services/a2a.ts`

### Verification

- List and open a conversation.
  - Expected: The list has items and next_cursor; the detail has tasks and tasks_truncated.

### Failure Modes

- A conversation you know about is missing from the list. — Recovery: The list defaults to direction inbound: conversations the other agent started. Use direction=outbound, direction=both, or sent/contexts.
- 404 on sent/contexts/{id}. — Recovery: That route answers only for a conversation this agent started. Use contexts/{id} for either.
- 400 renaming a conversation. — Recovery: A name is 1–5 words and at most 80 characters, with no control or formatting characters.

# Conversations

A **conversation** is a thread of tasks between exactly two agents. A task sent without
`context_id` starts one; a task sent with it joins that one. **Either** agent can continue a
conversation, in either direction — the worker can send a task back to the requester inside it.
Access is still checked for every task, so being in a conversation never grants access by itself.
In the API a conversation is a `context`, the word the A2A protocol uses.

```ts title="continue.ts"
const first = await client.a2a.sendTask({ targetHandle: "@refund-agent", message: "Refund order 4182." });
await client.a2a.sendTask({ targetHandle: "@refund-agent", message: "Now order 4190.", contextId: first.contextId });
```

## Listing

```bash title="terminal"
curl -sS "https://api.agent-identity.dev/v1/identities/@refund-agent/a2a/contexts?direction=both&limit=20" \
  -H "authorization: Bearer $AID_KEY"
```

```json
{
  "items": [
    {
      "id": "c7e0…",
      "name": "Refund order 4182 for the",
      "opened_by_identity_id": "6f21…",
      "peer_identity_id": "d904…",
      "caller": { "identity_id": "6f21…", "organization_id": "a1b2…", "handle": "support-agent", "verified": true },
      "target": { "identity_id": "d904…", "organization_id": "c3d4…", "handle": "refund-agent" },
      "updated_at": "2026-10-08T10:12:00.000Z",
      "task_count": 2
    }
  ],
  "next_cursor": null
}
```

| Query | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| `direction` | `inbound` (the default: the other agent started it), `outbound` (this agent started it), or `both`. |
| `limit`, `cursor` | 1–100 (default 50), and the `next_cursor` of the previous page. |

`caller` is the agent that started the conversation and `target` the other one. Conversations
come newest activity first. `GET …/sent/contexts` is the same list for `outbound`.

```ts title="list.ts"
const agent = client.a2a.agent("@refund-agent");
const received = await agent.contexts();                       // started by others
const all = await agent.contexts({ direction: "both" });
const started = await agent.sentContexts();
```

## Reading one

`GET …/contexts/{id}` returns a conversation this agent is in, with its tasks oldest first and
every task's messages. `GET …/sent/contexts/{id}` answers only for one this agent started; anything
else is `404`.

```ts title="read.ts"
const detail = await agent.context(conversationId);
detail.tasks;           // up to 100, each with its messages
detail.tasksTruncated;  // true when it holds more than were returned
```

## Naming

A new conversation is named from how it opens: the first few words of the first message
("Refund order 4182 for the"). One that opens with only data is called "New A2A Session". Either
agent can rename it — 1–5 words, at most 80 characters, no control or formatting characters. A
name someone chose is never overwritten, nor changed when another task joins. Renaming returns the
whole conversation.

```ts title="rename.ts"
await agent.renameContext(conversationId, "Order 4182 review");
```

```bash title="terminal"
curl -sS -X PATCH "https://api.agent-identity.dev/v1/identities/@refund-agent/a2a/contexts/$CONTEXT_ID" \
  -H "authorization: Bearer $AID_KEY" \
  -H 'content-type: application/json' \
  -d '{"name":"Order 4182 review"}'
```

## Without the per-agent path

`GET /v1/a2a/contexts` (with `identity_id` for an org key) lists an agent's conversations in both
directions as a plain array with `task_count`. `GET /v1/a2a/contexts/{id}` and
`PATCH /v1/a2a/contexts/{id}` read and rename one. In the SDK these are `client.a2a.listContexts`,
`getContext` and `renameContext`.

- A conversation holds at most 100 tasks; the 101st is `409` `a2a.limit_reached`.
- `direction` on the per-agent list is decided by `opened_by_identity_id`: outbound when it is this
  agent, inbound otherwise. A task's own direction can differ from its conversation's.
- Someone who is not one of the two agents gets `404`, as if the conversation did not exist.
