# What are the best email APIs for AI agents in 2026?

*2026-10-21 · By Naol Ketema, founder of Agent Identity*

**Short answer:** For agents that hold two-way conversations, pick an agent-first inbox API: AgentMail (email-focused), Inkbox (email plus phone, texts and iMessage) or Agent Identity (email, calls and A2A on a durable event log). For agents that mostly send, general email APIs like Resend, Postmark, SendGrid and Amazon SES are mature and cheaper per message, but you build inboxes, threading and wake-ups yourself.

## What an AI agent needs from an email API

A transactional email API sends mail from your app. An agent email API gives the agent its own address and treats replies as first-class. The difference matters once your agent has conversations.

- An inbox per agent, created through the API.
- Inbound mail delivered to your code, parsed.
- Threading, so a reply joins the right conversation.
- A way for the agent to wake up when a reply arrives: webhooks, WebSockets or a blocking wait.
- Deliverability: custom domains with SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
- Guardrails: allow and block lists, idempotent sends, per-agent credentials.

## Agent-first inbox APIs

- AgentMail: "the email inbox API for AI agents." Inboxes by API, threads, drafts, labels, attachments, webhooks and WebSockets, custom domains, allow and block lists, IMAP/SMTP, Python and TypeScript SDKs, an MCP server, and Pods for multi-tenant platforms. Free is 3 inboxes and 3,000 emails a month; Developer is $20 a month (as of October 2026). Best for: teams that want the most email-specific agent features.
- Inkbox: "Email, phone, iMessage, an internet address, and Agent2Agent, all under one identity." Adds SMS/MMS, iMessage, calls with a hosted voice agent, Slack, a vault and tunnels, with Python and TypeScript SDKs. Free is 3 identities; Developer is $30 a month (as of October 2026). Best for: agents that need texting or iMessage alongside email.
- Agent Identity: an agent with a handle, a mailbox, scoped keys and an append-only event log. Email with threading, drafts, attachments, custom domains and contact rules; phone calls with Aid Voice; Agent2Agent over A2A 1.0; a TypeScript SDK and a CLI. Free, Builder at $19 a month and Team at $149 a month. Best for: agents that send and then block on the reply, and agents that also call people or other agents. Texts are not available yet.

## General email APIs

These are mature, built for application email, and the right choice when your agent mostly sends. All of them can receive mail too, but they hand you a parsed message; inboxes per agent, threading and state are yours.

- Resend: developer-focused sending with inbound included on every plan ("Receive emails using webhooks"), at a verified domain or a Resend-managed subdomain. Free is 3,000 emails a month and 100 a day; Pro starts at $20 a month for 50,000 (as of October 2026). Best for: clean sending from modern app stacks.
- Postmark: transactional email with separate message streams for transactional and broadcast mail. Inbound processing delivers parsed mail "via a webhook in nicely formatted JSON" on Pro and Platform. Free is 100 emails a month; Basic is $15 a month and Pro $16.50 a month, each starting at 10,000 emails (as of October 2026). Best for: transactional mail where delivery speed and reputation matter.
- Twilio SendGrid: email "delivery at scale" with Inbound Parse posting multipart/form-data to your URL. 60-day free trial at 100 emails a day; Essentials from $19.95 a month, Pro from $89.95 a month with dedicated IPs (as of October 2026). Best for: high volume and teams already on Twilio.
- Amazon SES: $0.10 per 1,000 emails sent and $0.10 per 1,000 received plus $0.09 per 1,000 incoming chunks, with receipt rules that deliver mail to S3, SNS or WorkMail (as of October 2026). Receiving is only in some AWS Regions. Best for: the lowest per-message cost if you are comfortable assembling AWS parts.

## How to pick

- Your agent only sends notifications or reports: use Resend, Postmark, SendGrid or SES.
- Your agent holds email conversations and that is all: AgentMail or Agent Identity.
- Your agent must text people or use iMessage: Inkbox, or build on Twilio.
- Your agent emails, takes calls and works with other agents: Inkbox or Agent Identity.
- You want the agent to block until the reply arrives, with replay when something breaks: Agent Identity.
- You need the lowest unit price at very high volume: SES.

## Receiving a reply on Agent Identity

Every agent's mailbox receives as soon as the agent exists. Each inbound message is threaded, stored and appended to the event log, so the agent waits on it instead of polling:

```ts
import { AgentClient } from "@agentidentity/sdk";
const client = new AgentClient({
  baseUrl: "https://api.agent-identity.dev",
  apiKey: process.env.AID_KEY!,
});
const agent = await client.identities.create({
  handle: "support-agent",
  displayName: "Support Agent",
});
const message = await client.mail.send({
  identityId: agent.id,
  to: ["customer@example.com"],
  subject: "Your order",
  text: "Shipped this morning.",
  idempotencyKey: "order-4182-confirmation",
});
const { event, timedOut } = await client.events.wait({
  type: "mail.received",
  identityId: agent.id,
  filter: { threadId: message.threadId },
  timeoutMs: 55_000,
});
if (!timedOut) {
  const thread = await client.mail.getThread(agent.id, event!.payload.threadId);
  console.log(thread.messages.at(-1)?.textBody);
}
```

If you would rather push than wait, register a webhook for mail.received. Deliveries are signed with HMAC-SHA256 over the request id, timestamp and raw body, and verifyWebhook in the SDK checks them.

We make Agent Identity, so weigh our ranking accordingly. Every competitor fact here comes from that company's own site as of October 2026. Prices and limits change; check each pricing page before you commit.

## FAQ

### Can I use Gmail or Outlook for an AI agent?

You can, but they are built for people. Creating inboxes on demand, API keys instead of OAuth and automation-friendly limits are the reasons agent-first APIs exist.

### Which email API is cheapest for AI agents?

Per message, Amazon SES is the lowest of these at $0.10 per 1,000 sent (as of October 2026). You build inbox, threading and event logic on top.

### Do I need an agent-specific email API?

Only if your agent reads and replies. For send-only agents, a general email API is simpler and cheaper.

### Which of these has an MCP server?

AgentMail and Inkbox both document one. Agent Identity's MCP server exposes Agent2Agent tools, not email tools; email is through the SDK, REST API and CLI.
