What are the best AgentMail alternatives for AI agent email?

By Naol Ketema, founder · · Markdown

SHORT ANSWER

The closest AgentMail alternative is Inkbox, which has agent inboxes, IMAP/SMTP and Python and TypeScript SDKs, and adds phone, SMS and iMessage. Resend now offers inboxes with threads on top of its sending API, and Agent Identity suits agents that send and then block on the reply, with calls and A2A on the same identity. If your agent mostly sends, Postmark, Mailgun or Amazon SES cost less per message.

Why do people look for an AgentMail alternative?

AgentMail is a focused email API for agents with a lot of surface: inboxes, threads, labels, drafts, Pods for multi-tenancy, WebSockets, IMAP/SMTP, Python and TypeScript SDKs, an MCP server and a completed SOC 2 Type II audit. People still look elsewhere, usually for one of these reasons:

  • Their agent needs more than email: a phone number, texts or a channel to other agents.
  • The plan shape does not fit: Free is 3 inboxes and 100 emails a day; Developer is $20 a month for 10 inboxes and 10,000 emails a month; Startup jumps to $200 a month (as of 27 October 2026).
  • Free plan mail carries a "Sent via AgentMail" footer and has no custom domains.
  • They already send through another email provider and want inbound and threads in the same place.
  • They only send, and a general email API is cheaper per message.

What are the best AgentMail alternatives?

Facts below are from each vendor's site as of 27 October 2026.

  • Inkbox. Best for: the same agent inboxes plus phone, SMS and iMessage. Every plan has an inbox per identity, IMAP/SMTP access, a public URL and an A2A channel. Free is $0 for 3 identities; Developer is $25 a month for 10 identities, a dedicated number and 10 custom domains; Startup is $167 a month for 100 identities. Python, TypeScript and Rust SDKs and an MCP server.
  • Resend. Best for: teams that already send with Resend and want agent inboxes next to it. Every plan includes 3 inboxes with threads and agent access; paid plans add more at $1 an inbox a month, and inbox mail counts toward the sending quota. Free is 3,000 emails a month (100 a day); Pro starts at $20 a month for 50,000.
  • Agent Identity. Best for: agents that send and then wait for the reply, and agents that also take calls or trade tasks with other agents. Each agent gets a mailbox with threads, drafts, attachments and custom domains, and every send, reply, bounce and complaint lands in a durable event log the agent can block on. Free is $0 for 5 identities; Builder is $19 a month for 15; Team is $149 a month for 120. TypeScript SDK; no IMAP/SMTP yet.
  • Postmark. Best for: agents that mostly send transactional mail and need occasional inbound. Inbound processing delivers parsed mail to a webhook on Pro ($16.50 a month) and Platform ($18.00 a month), each starting at 10,000 emails. Free is 100 emails a month.
  • Mailgun. Best for: sending plus simple inbound routing. Free is 100 emails a day with 1 inbound route; Basic starts at $15 a month for 10,000 emails with 5 routes; Foundation is $35 a month for 50,000 with full inbound routing.
  • Amazon SES. Best for: the lowest per-message cost if you will build inboxes yourself. $0.10 per 1,000 emails sent and $0.10 per 1,000 received plus $0.09 per 1,000 incoming chunks.

How do agent inbox APIs differ from general email APIs?

Inkbox, Resend's inboxes and Agent Identity give each agent an address and keep the conversation for it. Postmark, Mailgun and SES hand you a parsed inbound message and stop there; mapping addresses to agents, storing threads and waking the agent are yours to build. That is a fine trade at high volume or when your agent rarely reads replies.

What does the reply loop look like on Agent Identity?

AgentMail pushes inbound mail over webhooks or WebSockets. Agent Identity also signs webhooks, but an agent can instead send and block on the event log until the reply in that thread arrives:

import { AgentClient } from "@agentidentity/sdk";

const client = new AgentClient({
  baseUrl: "https://api.agent-identity.dev",
  apiKey: process.env.AID_KEY!,
});

const identityId = process.env.AID_AGENT!;

const message = await client.mail.send({
  identityId,
  to: ["customer@example.com"],
  subject: "Your order",
  text: "Shipped this morning.",
  idempotencyKey: "order-4182-confirmation",
});

const { event, timedOut } = await client.events.wait({
  type: "mail.received",
  identityId,
  filter: { threadId: message.threadId },
  timeoutMs: 55_000,
});

if (!timedOut) {
  const thread = await client.mail.getThread(identityId, event!.payload.threadId);
  console.log(thread.messages.at(-1)?.textBody);
}

Agent Identity has daily sending limits on every plan: 2,000 outbound emails a day on Builder and 20,000 on Team. Plan details: see agent-identity.dev/pricing.

How do you migrate from AgentMail?

  • Use your own domain. Addresses on AgentMail's domain stay there; addresses on your domain move with you.
  • Add the domain on the new provider first and publish the SPF, DKIM and DMARC records it gives you. Keep AgentMail's DKIM record until the move is done.
  • Lower the MX record's TTL a day ahead, then point MX at the new provider. Mail in flight during the change can land on either side, so watch both for a day.
  • Re-create one inbox per agent on the new side with the same local part, so contacts keep replying to the same address.
  • Copy history you need first. AgentMail offers IMAP access, which most mail tools can read from.
  • Repoint webhooks or event consumers, and update any allow and block lists.
  • If you move several agents, move one first and check inbound, threading and deliverability before the rest.
