What are the best Inkbox alternatives for AI agents?

By Naol Ketema, founder · · Markdown

SHORT ANSWER

No single product covers everything Inkbox does, so the best alternative depends on the channel you need most. For email only, AgentMail is the closest match; for phone, SMS and iMessage, AgentPhone or Dial; for an agent identity with email, calls and Agent2Agent on a durable event log, Agent Identity, which does not have SMS or iMessage yet.

Why do people look for an Inkbox alternative?

Inkbox gives an agent "Email, phone, iMessage, an internet address, and Agent2Agent, all under one identity," with Python, TypeScript and Rust SDKs, an MCP server, IMAP/SMTP, Slack, a vault and tunnels. It covers a lot. People look elsewhere for narrower reasons:

  • They use one channel heavily and want a product that goes deeper on it.
  • Usage outgrows the allowances: Developer ($25 a month) includes 30 call minutes and 300 SMS/MMS a month, and calls then cost $0.03 a minute (as of 27 October 2026).
  • They need numbers outside the US and Canada, which Inkbox lists for Enterprise.
  • They want pay-as-you-go pricing rather than a plan.
  • They want a voice stack they can tune: model, voice and transcriber.

What are the best Inkbox alternatives?

Facts below are from each vendor's site as of 27 October 2026.

  • AgentMail. Best for: email-only agents. Inboxes, threads, labels, drafts, Pods for multi-tenancy, WebSockets, IMAP/SMTP, Python and TypeScript SDKs and an MCP server. Free is 3 inboxes; Developer $20 a month for 10; Startup $200 a month for 150 with a SOC 2 report.
  • AgentPhone. Best for: phone-first agents that call and text. $3.00 a number a month, voice at $0.13 a minute with your agent or $0.22 hosted, SMS at $0.02 a segment, iMessage lines from $150 a month. Python and Node.js SDKs and an MCP server. US and Canada.
  • Dial (getdial.ai). Best for: messaging across channels and countries. Voice, SMS, iMessage and WhatsApp on one number; $3 a number a month, calls $0.13 to $0.22 a minute, US SMS $0.02 and 200+ countries at tiered rates. Node.js and Python SDKs and an MCP server.
  • Agent Identity. Best for: agents that need email, calls and A2A on one identity and want to block on events instead of handling webhooks. Each agent gets a mailbox, an optional number with Aid Voice, an A2A agent card, org and agent keys, a vault and tunnels (both beta). Free $0 for 5 identities; Builder $19 a month with 1 number; Team $149 a month with 5. No SMS, iMessage or Slack yet; TypeScript SDK only.
  • Twilio. Best for: building your own stack with global numbers. Local numbers $1.15 a month, voice $0.0140 a minute outbound and $0.0085 inbound, SMS $0.0083 a segment plus carrier fees. You build inboxes, threading and the agent layer.
  • Vapi. Best for: voice agents where you choose each part of the stack. $0.05 a minute for hosting plus provider costs, free US numbers or imported Twilio and Telnyx numbers, an MCP server. Voice first; no inbox.
  • Retell. Best for: production voice agents with testing and analytics. $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, numbers $2.00 a month, SMS from SMS-enabled numbers, TypeScript and Python SDKs, an MCP server. Voice first; no inbox.

How is Agent Identity different from Inkbox?

The shape is the same: one identity per agent with an inbox, a number, a public URL and A2A. Both have agent-scoped API keys, contact rules, a vault and an MCP server. Inkbox covers more channels today: SMS/MMS, iMessage, Slack and IMAP/SMTP, with SDKs in three languages.

Agent Identity is built around an append-only event log. Email, delivery status, calls and A2A tasks all land there; client.events.wait long-polls for the next match (up to 55 seconds per request) and resumes from a cursor after a restart, and any event can be replayed to webhooks. Plans count identities and daily limits rather than monthly minute allowances: Builder allows 1,000 call minutes per 24 hours, Team 10,000. Calls have a published rate of $0.02 a minute that is not billed yet. See agent-identity.dev/pricing.

import { AgentClient } from "@agentidentity/sdk";

const client = new AgentClient({
  baseUrl: "https://api.agent-identity.dev",
  apiKey: process.env.AID_KEY!,
});

const identityId = process.env.AID_AGENT!;
const since = new Date();

const call = await client.phone.placeCall({
  identityId,
  to: "+14155550100",
  mode: "hosted_agent",
  reason: "Confirm Thursday's delivery window and ask for a gate code.",
  idempotencyKey: "delivery-7731-confirm",
});

let ended = null;
while (!ended) {
  const { event } = await client.events.wait({
    type: "call.ended",
    aggregateType: "call",
    aggregateId: call.id,
    since,
    timeoutMs: 55_000,
  });
  ended = event;
}

console.log(ended.payload);

How do you migrate from Inkbox?

  • List what each agent uses: email, number, iMessage, Slack, vault entries, tunnels, A2A. Pick a destination per channel; you may end up with two products.
  • Email: if your agents use a custom domain, add it on the new provider, publish its SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, lower the MX TTL a day ahead, then point MX at the new provider. Addresses on Inkbox's own domain cannot move.
  • Copy mail history you need first. Inkbox offers IMAP access on every plan.
  • Phone: a new provider means a new number unless you port it. Ask both sides about porting before you cancel, and tell contacts if the number changes.
  • A2A: publish the new agent card and update any peers or allow rules that pointed at the old one.
  • Secrets: re-create vault entries on the new side; do not export them in plain text.
  • Move one agent first, check inbound mail, calls and events, then move the rest.

FAQ

What is the cheapest Inkbox alternative?

Is there an Inkbox alternative with iMessage?

Yes. AgentPhone and Dial both offer iMessage lines. Agent Identity does not offer iMessage.

Which Inkbox alternative supports SMS?
